colleague chuck hagel is confirmed, hopefully as early as next week. for all these reasons, i have long been a supporter of renewable fuels, and i encourage the further development of an industry that is important both to our national security as well as to our farm economy. whether we are talking food or water or energy security, let me put it this way -- in the future, more crops in the field can mean fewer soldiers in the field. at the same time, as important as our defense capabilities are, we also need to rebalance toward the other three d's. the u.s. today spends more on defense than on diplomacy, democracy, and development all put together. meanwhile, in the past year china has more than doubled its investment in developing new agricultural technologies. those are the kinds of farsighted policies that are enabling china to emerge as a world power and which we, frankly, need to get back to. as we shift our focus and our resources toward smarter, more constructive forms of international interaction, it is critical that food security remain at the center of shaping this secure world. whe

their support for israel. the only exception to that rule was senator chuck hagel. i don't have anything to go with that with what you might have said but -- some of the concerns -- i used to say when i was the whip in the house you can count on the house and the senate to be among other thing, always pro-israel. i think that is the main stream of our views. i've seen a number of times that you've said you can be pro-israel but that does not mean you have to be for everything that israel is for. they are what they are. they are reported from comments that you made that are out of the context of the other comments. also, earlier today, i asked you about the bloated pentagon. you said that -- those comments were before the sequestration bill passed. they were after the bill passed. sequestration passed on august 2 and the interview was on august 29. what you said on august 29 of -- in that "financial times" interview you said "the defense department, i think -- this is your quote "the defense department is bloated. let's look at the reality is that the defense department has gotten everything th

secretary of defense, chuck hagel, and i am confident and i've expressed that confidence publicly that the men and women of the department of defense will have the kind of advocate they need as the nation emerges from more than a decade of war. lastly, i'm honored to be here, as i said, as a catholic and as a proud graduate of another jesuit institution, santa clara university. my time in the university's undergraduate and law school, in many ways shaped the rest of my life as this education will shape the rest of your lives. i remain deeply thankful to the jesuits for the outstanding education that i received. having gone through seven years of philosophy and syllogisms and theology and cannon law, i have been blessed by all the grace and skepticism that jesuits can give. more importantly, i've been shaped by what i believe is their pragmatic approach to life and to faith and to the issues in general. it was that education and my catholic upbringing, particularly as the son of italian immigrants, that instilled in me the very core principles and values that i carry with me till t

talked about chuck hagel's nomination for secretary of defense. i think it is sickening that senators like mccain, they have blackened his nomination. i think he is the best person that the time to be secretary of defense. i think mccain has a ven debt that against him. that's about it. i love this idea about tragse minimum wage. that was probably the best thing he said tonight. thank you. >> rick in virginia and he is a republican. good evening. caller: how are you? >> good. caller: first of all, let's talk about the i.r.s. and taxes. first of all, i think the i.r.s. should abolish them period. they will put a surcharge on everything. if you're a billionaire and you spend $1 billion you get taxed on it. if you come into the country illegally, you're getting taxed. i look at our government as what they are doing right now as far as retirement is concerned. they get the full paycheck no matter if they work or not. i think that is totally incorrect. it should not be like that. it should be like any other person. why should my social security money pay for their retirement. then when the
